THE MOVEMENT

How to perform

  1. Set the bench to a incline angle with the dumbbells above the chest and a small bend in the elbows.
  2. Keep the elbow angle nearly fixed as the arms open in a wide arc.
  3. Lower until you feel a controlled chest stretch without forcing the shoulders back.
  4. Bring the dumbbells back together by reversing the same arc.

IRONYOU / CORE

Core cues

  • Set the bench securely to the incline angle before loading the movement.
  • Move through a chest-focused range you can control without forcing the shoulders too far back.
  • Think about bringing the upper arms together rather than just moving the hands.

STAY SHARP

Common mistakes

  • Changing the elbow angle throughout the rep.
  • Going so deep that the shoulders lose a stable position.
  • Using momentum or too much load and turning the movement into a press.
