Should You Use the Same Weight for Every Set or Vary It?

Your workout says:

3 × 8–10

Do you use the same weight for all three sets?

Or should you increase the weight each set?

For most simple gym programs, using the same working weight across sets is the easiest place to start.

It makes progress readable.

But it is not the only valid structure.

Some programs deliberately use heavier top sets, lighter back-off sets, pyramids, or drop sets.

The important part is knowing whether the weight change is part of the plan or just a reaction to uncertainty.

For standard working sets in the same rep range:

Use the same weight across sets unless your program gives you a reason to change it.

Example:

3 × 8–10 at 70 kg

You might get:

  • 70 × 10
  • 70 × 9
  • 70 × 8

That is normal.

You do not need to reduce the weight just because fatigue lowers your reps.

Change the load when:

  • the planned set structure calls for it
  • you started too heavy
  • technique is breaking down
  • you are intentionally using top sets and back-off sets
  • you are doing a specific intensity technique such as a drop set

Why same-weight sets are useful

Straight sets make comparison simple.

If last week you did:

  • 60 × 10
  • 60 × 9
  • 60 × 8

and this week:

  • 60 × 10
  • 60 × 10
  • 60 × 9

you improved.

The load stayed constant.

The rep trend became clearer.

That is one reason simple programs work well for beginners and intermediates.

Using the same weight does not mean every set must have identical reps.

Fatigue accumulates.

Some workouts use a pyramid.

Example:

  • 60 kg × 10
  • 65 kg × 8
  • 70 kg × 6

The load goes up while reps go down.

This is not automatically better or worse.

It is simply a different structure.

The problem comes when you improvise this every workout without tracking the pattern.

If your loading changes randomly, comparison becomes harder.

What is a top set and back-off set?

A top-set approach uses one heavier set followed by one or more lighter sets.

Example:

  • 80 kg × 6
  • 72.5 kg × 9
  • 72.5 kg × 8

The heavy first set gives you exposure to a higher load.

The back-off sets provide more work at a lower load.

This can be useful for more experienced lifters.

But it should be intentional.

If you are new, straight sets are easier to learn and measure.

When should you lower weight between sets?

Lowering weight can make sense if your first set showed that you selected the wrong load.

Example:

Target:

3 × 10

First set:

50 kg × 6, with technique already deteriorating.

There is little value in pretending 50 kg is still the correct working weight.

Reduce it and complete better sets.

What about drop sets?

Drop sets intentionally reduce weight with minimal rest so you can continue the set.

That is an intensity technique.

It is different from normal straight sets.

with:

one extended drop set using several loads

Both can exist in training, but they should be logged and interpreted differently.

Same weight is especially useful when learning an exercise

Do not automatically switch to 8 kg for set two just because the first set was stronger.

Turning every workout into a pyramid

A normal rep drop does not automatically require a load change.

Forcing the same weight when technique collapses

Comparing different set structures as if they were identical

A top set plus back-offs is not directly the same as three straight sets.
