THE SHORT ANSWER

How Do You Track Progressive Overload?

To track progressive overload, record the exercises you perform, the weight you lift and the repetitions you complete.

Compare those results across sessions to identify changes in performance.

IronYou brings your logged sets, previous performance and relevant exercise statistics together, helping you review your progression without relying on memory.

WAYS PERFORMANCE CAN CHANGE

Progress Isn't Always More Weight.

One more rep can be progress. So can lifting more weight for the same number of repetitions.

But one weaker set doesn't necessarily mean you're losing strength.

Compare performances over time, using the same exercise variation and considering technique, fatigue and your training plan.

IronYou helps you see the recorded differences. You decide what they mean for your next workout.

These are illustrative examples.

Example 1 — More repetitions

Previous workout: 60 kg × 8

Current workout: 60 kg × 9

Same weight. One more repetition.

Example 2 — More weight

Previous workout: 60 kg × 8

Current workout: 62.5 kg × 8

Same repetitions. Higher weight.

Example 3 — A weaker set

Previous workout: 60 kg × 8

Current workout: 60 kg × 6

A weaker individual performance does not necessarily mean long-term regression.

LOOK BEYOND A PERSONAL RECORD

Progress Isn't Just Your Best Set.

Your strongest set doesn't tell the whole story.

Last workout, you completed three Bench Press sets at 60 kg: 10, 9 and 8 reps — 27 repetitions in total.

This workout, you completed 10, 10 and 9 reps — 29 repetitions.

Your best set stayed the same, but you performed two more repetitions across the workout.

Tracking every set helps you notice changes that a single personal record might miss.

Previous workout

Set 1: 60 kg × 10

Set 2: 60 kg × 9

Set 3: 60 kg × 8

Total: 27 repetitions

Current workout

Set 1: 60 kg × 10

Set 2: 60 kg × 10

Set 3: 60 kg × 9

Total: 29 repetitions

Same weight. Same best set.

Two more repetitions across three sets.

EXERCISE-SPECIFIC COMPARISONS

Compare Like With Like.

A performance comparison is more useful when it refers to the same movement.

IronYou keeps your workout records connected to the exercise variations you select, including relevant differences in grip, angle and equipment.

This helps you review your progression without confusing different exercise variations.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Progressive Overload Tracking.

Does adding one rep count as progressive overload?

Adding a repetition at the same weight can represent progress when the exercise and performance conditions are reasonably comparable.

Should I increase weight every workout?

No. Progressive overload doesn't require increasing the weight every session. Adding repetitions, improving performance and following a consistent progression plan can also matter.

Does IronYou automatically increase my training weights?

No. The Workout Tracker records and compares your performance. It does not automatically change your training plan. IronYou Core's recommendation features are a separate part of the product.
